Laska is a beautiful, very young 10 year old, 95 lbs, spayed female Malamute who loves to play and go for walks. This lonely girl is located in Eastern Ontario and is looking for a new home due to unfortunate family circumstances.

Laska does not like small yappy dogs; gets along with some dogs but not others and had previously lived with a male. Laska is best placed in a new home as the only dog and no cats, please! She also likes to chase rabbits, foxes, etc., so a securely fenced in yard will be required.

Laska is very friendly and a Talker and loves to talk to you. She has not been around small children, but was fine with her owner's teens. According to her owner, Laska used to pull on walks, but not much anymore.

Laska was assessed by the AMHL. One of our very experienced volunteers reports the following:

"Laska is a very sweet older dog that could stand to lose some weight. She is very playful for her age and was not at all shy with me. She appears physically well cared for but shows signs of loneliness and boredom. Rabies vaccination reported valid to 2017. No known history of thyroid or other health problems.

Temperament: Incredibly sweet dog, smallish female. Came straight up to me as soon as I entered the back yard, wagging from head to foot, leaned in for rubs.

Petting: Loved it. Went into instant cat mode, leaning and rubbing against my legs.

Reaction/Sensitivities: Likes having base of tail scratched. Tense with having tail handled but allows it. Hips do not appear to be sore or sensitive, despite Laska’s age.

Handle Paws: Shakes paw but doesn’t like having toes handled. No growl or snap – just nudge with nose and weak attempt to pull paw away. (Note: Laska has never had her nails trimmed).

Hug: Laska just leans into the hug.

Brushing: Laska does not like the slicker but is fine with normal pin and bristle brush. I suspect that the slicker issue has more to do with incorrect use but disliking it is probably a learned behavior by now. Patience will be required to get Laska accustomed to the correct use of slicker and comb.

Leash walk: Laska walks on a halti. Pulls somewhat but is easily controlled with one hand. Laska is not a large malamute and she is older. I suspect that a passing cat or dog might cause more pulling but nothing unmanageable.

Training/commands: Laska knows Sit for treats and takes them very gently. She Sits on command without a treat (unless distracted). Comes and lays down on command. Laska has been kept tied outside and will need a refresher for house training - currently she will go to the door to be let out and if not let out, she will have an accident at the door.

Other pets: In terms of other pets, she might do okay with a non-dominant, calm canine companion but careful testing would be in order. No cats, small dogs, uncaged bunnies, etc. "

If you have questions about Laska, please contact her rescue coordinator, Anand, at: Ontario@MalamuteRescue.Com

Given that it is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how any dog will react in a given situation, without completeknowledge of its life experiences, the AMHL urges the adopter to exercise caution in introducing the dog tonew situations until the dog has become fully adjusted to its new environment and the adopter has had an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's unique personality.
