Badger is a young neutered boy in the care of Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection. Badger is currently in foster care and looking for a home who will understand his needs as a Malamute/Shepherd mix. He displays more Malamute than Shepherd in his personality! Because he is younger and loves snow so much, he has great potential to be a good sled dog. This will help burn his ample energy in a positive manner. He has shown an affectionate side and loves to spend time indoors with people as much as he does playing. Badger is still very puppy like and will need to continue his training as he is still learning. His foster mom reports: "I can very confidently say - he is a typical young male - mostly Mal and all that goes with it. That being said... he is still a puppy in many ways. He likes to chew and has strong jaws. He has not chewed furniture as we were warned he might. I have big dog chew toys which he has worked over very well! He loves to play and will rough-house... this is not necessarily a good thing and I have tried to discourage it. When he gets rowdy I say "o.k. out with you... take it outside". He loves to romp in the snow and would make a great snow plow. He is good with other dogs and has shown no signs of aggression with our dog or with any other dog that we've seen on our walks. He does pull [he is a malamute, it's what they were bred to do] but he is very controllable with a light choke collar. He is clean in the house and will sleep through the night, although one night he thought I wanted to be up at 5:00 a.m. I suggested he go back to bed. He waited until 7:00. He works in harmony with my old dog who thinks 7:00 is late enough. When I worked I was up at 5:00 so I'm not sure who wanted me up early! He takes treats very gently. I wish my dog was as gentle. With her I have to remind her to, "take it nice". Badger pretty much ignores the cats. I have not allowed him on the furniture which I believe he has been able to do in the past. He tells us he used to sleep on the bed but respects our decision to not share. He is good in the car sitting quietly. Overall he is a good boy. He will need to be with someone who understands malamutes. They can be very independent and will test who is the leader in the pack. He does not come well when called and may or may not sit when asked. We are working on this. As he has become more comfortable he is getting better. He follows me around the house and is usually underfoot. If I'm on the computer or watching t.v. he lies quietly. He comes with me to do chores and has ignored the horses. I have not let him in with the sheep." If you can provide Badger with the type of home he will need to mature into a wonderful family member, please email: admin@nasap.ca indicating Badger, Pet ID: 10-023 D Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection, Sherwood Park, AB or call 780-922-0250 |
