Grace is a beautiful 10 year old seal and white female Malamute who has come into the AMHL rescue program via an animal shelter in Quebec. This lovely lady is in foster care in the Barrie area. Grace is really an awesome dog, and charms anyone who meets her. She looks for affection by putting her head on your lap when you're sitting down. She thoroughly enjoys people time and currently must be convinced to go outside, as she prefers to be indoors with her "peeps.". Her foster home consists of a busy family with two Malamute-savvy children (7 & 10 yrs old) and two adults. Right from first days at her foster home, Grace has shown excellent patience with the children and their friends. This beautiful girl has very good manners, and doesn't hesitate to use them when asked. While on leash, she easily sits while waiting at corners and while she's not a heeler, she doesn't pull. At mealtimes, she sits during preparation and waits for release before tucking into her kibble. She is a bit of a pacer, but will settle into her bed when asked. Grace is left on her own for about six hours each day, and respects the gates that leave her with her bed in the kitchen and hallway. She is easily guided into a separate yard enclosure to go outside, and hasn't shown signs of digging or jumping the 6' fence. She anticipates walks whenever someone puts on a coat and boots. We may still be honeymooning, but the only obvious "malamute buffet" action that has been witnessed is sneaking a tomato out of a shopping bag left at her level - on two different occasions! She has been to the vet office twice - one for a weigh-in and once for a check-up - and while she's not keen to get through the doors she is well-mannered while there. The vet was able to poke and prod her while she was standing and lying down with no issue. Even he appreciated her demeanour! Grace has adjusted to the cat in the home and seems to understand that a cat is a member of the family. Grace does have an issue with the otherwise submissive neutered male Malamute who is sharing his home with her. Apparently while in the shelter environment she was said to be good with other dogs, but in the home she's seeking to be top dog. She also has exhibited food aggression (over a dog food bowl) with the other Malamute in her foster home. The foster family is working to resolve that issue and will provide updates. Grace is just a lovely girl with a sweet demeanour and a lot of love to give. Given that it is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how any dog will react in a given situation, without completeknowledge of its life experiences, the AMHL urges the adopter to exercise caution in introducing the dog tonew situations until the dog has become fully adjusted to its new environment and the adopter has had an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's unique personality. |
