Bennie is a handsome, gentle, 12 year old male Malamute who weighs approximately 103 pounds. Bennie is in need of an urgent foster home as his owners are moving out of the country at the end of July.

Rather than moving Bennie with them to a very distant location and all the stress that would put on a senior malamute, the owners feel it would be far better for Bennie to stay in Canada.

Bennie was recently assessed by an AMHL Volunteer, who reports the following:

"Bennie allowed me to touch him all over without issue. He took a dog biscuit from me like he was taking it from a baby. When I knelt down to be at his level, Bennie voluntarily gave me his paw.

Bennie has some very non-mal like traits - for example he enjoys swimming - which may stem from the fact that he currently lives along a waterfront area. He is also not an escape artist, nor a digger! He does seem to like dogs of any size - but here comes the typical mal behaviour - he does have a prey drive so should not live with a cat or other small furry creatures!

Bennie can certainly live with another dog. When Bennie was 5 years old, his owners rescued a female Malamute who had been abused. Bennie was completely accommodating, allowing her to raid his bowl (he would just walk away). He seemed to mentor this female Malamute who had issues with men. She learned to trust Bennie's owner through the bond that Bennie had with him.

He does not initiate any skirmishes with other dogs, however, he will defend himself if he's persistently challenged.

He enjoys a 30 minute walk each day. Since his bladder is not as strong as it used to be, he will gently scratch the bedroom door until someone wakes up to let him out in the middle of the night.

This beautiful boy has a small lump on his neck however it did not appear to bother him when I touched it. A vet has not yet assessed the lump. It is apparent that he has arthritis in his back end. He is slow to sit and to stand. He needs a little TLC, such as teeth cleaning and nail trimming. His diet consists of kibble and a large can of wet dog food. He has access to the balcony in his home so he can go between indoors and outdoors at his leisure."

To become an approved adopter of Bennie or another rescued Malamute,
please complete an Application to Adopt a Malamute from the AMHL at:

Given that it is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how any dog will react in a given situation, without completeknowledge of its life experiences, the AMHL urges the adopter to exercise caution in introducing the dog tonew situations until the dog has become fully adjusted to its new environment and the adopter has had an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's unique personality.
