Mauja |

Mauja is an approximately 8 year old 90 lb spayed female Malamute. She was adopted out by the AMHL a number of years ago and her owners can no longer keep her as they do not have the time to care for her rehabilitation from needed surgery. Update: We are pleased to announce that we have found a wonderful foster home for Mauja where she is able to receive the medical care she needs and recuperate from her needed surgery! Mauja suffers from seizures, which are easily controlled with her medication. She is also on medication for incontinence and an anti-inflammatory to control pain due to a torn ligament. Mauja is looking for a forever home after her surgery; one where she can live out the rest of her life as she deserves - as a treasured sofa girl with slow leasurely walks and as a companion to watch TV with nights! She just wants to be with people. Although Mauja lived with a male Malamute, she is not good with other strange dogs. Mauja is excellent with children of all ages. Loves being brushed, petted, playing fetch, raw bones and stuffie toys, and especially keeping you company! Mauja is housetrained, crate trained, and has attended obedience classes. She is good on leash walks, but will start to pull if she sees other dogs, so training reminders will be important. Mauja is not an outside dog - she doesn't even like snow (we haven't told her that most Malamutes like snow)! Mauja is a house dog looking for someone who loves the breed who would appreciate her loyality and companionship. Now that she has a loving foster home to care for her, she will need to have TPLO surgery for her left hind leg. Mauja's Vet has expressed concerns about the delaying this surgery causing further damage and stress on her good right hind leg. Update July 17, 2009: Mauja has been doing very well since her surgery on July 9th. Since she's had a few days rest, Mauja is recuperating exceptionally well. Her spirits are bright and she is starting to show allot of enthusiasm over wanting to get "out and about". She had been accustomed to limping around on only 3 of her legs prior to having surgery, which is clearly evident when we are out for bathroom breaks. With having the support needed for her healing leg, she has no problem showing us how well she can get around in the yard. These are a very good signs she is recuperating nicely. Update: October 2009: Mauja has been recuperating so well from her surgery that her foster home reports its hard to tell she even had the TPLO done! She is now able to walk up and down stairs in her foster home without any problems. Mauja is feeling so much better that she is now showing a real happy and playful side. She uses her injured leg without any indication of having had surgery. Although she loves to go outdoors for her walks, she prefers to spend most of her time inside. She is very people oriented and relishes hanging out around the house. Mauja gets along great with her house mate cats. She has proven to be among the less common of mals who has a low prey drive towards small animals of all kinds. Mauja has become very loving with her people and really opened her heart to returning the abundance of love she is receiving. She currently lives with three other mals, but does show signs of anxiety when they are in the same room. She becomes stressed and looks towards he care givers for direction when near the other mals. Stress should be avoided with her epilepsy. Mauja's new home should be one where she is the only dog and not have to encounter feeling insecure. Since Mauja has been in foster care, we have also been able to re-evaluate her over all health. She does not have any incontinence condition and does not need medication for that what so ever. Also, although she has epilepsy, her seizures are under control. The medication to control them only costs approximately $20 per month so this is not a costly factor in her daily care. Mauja would make a very loving companion to a family who would be willing to commit to giving her the special love and care she has deserved so much prior to her arrival in her current foster home." Mauja's Surgery Fund: The estimate for Mauja's pre-op, surgery, and post op care is approximately $3000.00. We are asking for your help so that the AMHL can provide Mauja with the medical care she needs. Any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated. Given that it is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how any dog will react in a given situation, without completeknowledge of its life experiences, the AMHL urges the adopter to exercise caution in introducing the dog tonew situations until the dog has become fully adjusted to its new environment and the adopter has had an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's unique personality. |
