See November Update below.
Tia is an approximately 10-12 year old spayed female Malamute in AMHL foster care in BC and is described as having a heart of gold by her initial caregivers.

Tia is a very lucky girl! She was found in a ditch and presumed to have been hit by a car. Initially, she was unable to walk or wag her tail. X-rays indicated no fractures, other than a broken tooth that will need to be extracted. Her Vet reported that she was likely suffering from spinal inflammation as a result of being injured. The inflammation is expected to heal with time.

Tia was assessed by one of our experienced rescue coordinators who said that Tia met them politely and was very gentle. She took a treat gently as well as sitting and giving a "high 5". Diana reported that she is now able to wag her tail better, stand, but not too long, and she is able to walk around fairly well, but slowly. Diana described her as great with kids, very sweet and gentle and a "love muffin". Diana stated that Tia seems to be an easy going Malamute who just wants to curl up close to you.

Thus far, Tia is reportedly fine with other dogs and shows no interest in cats.
When Tia arrived at her foster home, she told the resident male Malamute to mind his manners and curled up on a doggy bed and went off to sleep.

April 22 update - Tia's foster Mom reports:

"Tia is a sweet older girl who loves to be with her family.  She is
good with most other dogs (particularly ones smaller than her).  She
took a while to get used to the larger male she lives with.  She
loves to lay on her bed and be petted behind the ears and generally
just be with people.  She is house trained and has been left for most
of the day without any accidents.  She prefers to be left in the
house than out in the yard when alone.  If left in the yard alone for
long periods, she may dig.

Tia has some soreness on her back end but has improved dramatically
with a proper diet and exercise.  She finds long flights of stairs
difficult, particularly descending them.  So, a home without too many
stairs may be preferred.  She is a girl with lots of willpower,
determination and joie de vivre.  She will try anything even though
sometimes her body may not always let her.  When she gets excited and
happy she woowoos to let everyone know and you can see the sparkle in
her eyes.

Tia would be a wonderful family dog.  She does not require lots of
activity, but enjoys some every day.  She loves company and would
enjoy an environment where she does not need to be left alone all day
every day."
Update November 2009:
After all of the great strides that Tia has taken to settle into a comfy routine with her foster family, she has just recently been diagnosed with Cushings disease. With this disease comes a great deal of challenges for Tia herself but the treatments/medications for Cushings are very expensive. Once treatments have started, Tia's symptoms should start to decrease but she will need to maintain the medications for the remainder of her life. We are desperately seeking donations or a sponsor for Tia's treatments. Any amount donated is one step further to a treatment for her.
Cost for Medication:
Tia's Vet has recommended that she be treated with Trilostane. Trilostane and her thyroid medication costs $8.00 per day -- $240.00 per month.
Any amount, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated. Ways to donate toward the cost of Tia's medication :

Given that it is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how any dog will react in a given situation, without completeknowledge of its life experiences, the AMHL urges the adopter to exercise caution in introducing the dog tonew situations until the dog has become fully adjusted to its new environment and the adopter has had an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's unique personality.
