MAIKA is a 9 year old, female Malamute, in AMHL foster care near Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Maika's foster parent explains:
"Maika came to us in Foster due to a terminal illness of her long-time owner whom she and her younger brother lived with since puppies. In no time, her whole world turned upside down when she & her brother were taken to the Montreal SPCA and split up (he was since adopted).

She is slow to trust but she has been with us for 2 months now and we see an awesome girl emerging! She is very youthful for her age (more like 6 or 7), loves long walks and frolicking in the snow - nothing better than diving head first into a snow bank and coming up with a face full of snow. Maika is a real character, woo wooing constantly, especially when she is anxious to get going for one of her precious walks. And sooo cute when we wanted to cut her toenails she just lay down and tucked her feet underneath herself!

Maika's Personality & Character:
- quite smart/quick to learn (especially considering she was a French dog and is now learning all over in English - a bilingual dog)
- gentle taking food/treats (loves chicken wieners, yogurt, peanut butter & toast!!)
- walks great on a leash, barely pulls at all (not very Mal like!)
- fully house-trained and excellent in the house
- excellent in her pen and makes no attempts at all to escape
- quiet in her nature, does not jump up on people/things

Special Needs:
We have had issues with her growling at times, mostly when she is lying down & we go to pat her. As these issues are becoming less as she starts to settle, we truly believe this is her way of expressing her insecurity and uncertainty while trying to deal with such a big adjustment in her senior years. To her credit, the growls have never escalated. Maika should be adopted to adults who can be calm, patient & understanding of her fears to help her learn it is OK to trust again.

Although she did live with her younger brother, it is unknown how she would react to a strange dog, so she would be best placed in an only dog home (certainly not with dominant dogs, small dogs or cats).

If you can offer this truly special girl the right home, you will be rewarded many times over with a real cutey with personality plus!"
